Rolex introduced the calibre 4130 movement in the year 2000. This is a completely designed and manufactured in-house movement. You can find this impressive technology in the Daytona collection. Previously, Daytona used chronograph movements produced by Zenith. The switch to calibre 4130 may have been driven by the race to become a 100% in-house manufacturer, and there may have been issues with maintaining Zenith’s calibre 4030 movement (for example, fewer components).
According to Rolex, this model features a new generation automatic chronograph movement – calibre 4130 – specifically designed for the Cosmograph Daytona line and entirely manufactured by the brand. Considered a masterpiece of technical and micro-mechanical engineering, with innovative technical solutions and patented features, this high-performance movement has set a new standard for luxurious automatic chronograph movements in terms of durability, reliability, performance, accuracy, and ease of maintenance.
According to Luxury Tyme:
“With the calibre 4130, Rolex has for the first time used ceramic ball bearings in the self-winding system. While the winding system may appear similar to the one used in previous non-chronograph calibres (including the characteristic rotor design), it is not. Most of Rolex’s calibres rely on a single jewel bearing combined with proper lubrication to keep the rotor freely rotating. The use of ceramic ball bearings means better efficiency in the rotor’s rotation and less maintenance required.”
