1. Patek Philippe’s History of Brand Development

Patek Philippe was founded in 1839 under the initial leadership of a collaboration between Norbert Antoine de Patek (an aristocrat and Polish businessman) and Franciszek Czapek (a Polish watchmaker).

Antoine Norbert de Patek (1811-1877)

After the failed Polish uprising against the Russian Empire in 1830, many Polish people sought refuge elsewhere, including Antoine Norbert de Patek. In the years 1830 and 1832, he left Warsaw, Poland, heading west to seek temporary refuge in Bamberg, Germany, where he managed a committee of Polish refugees. He also stayed in Cahors, Amiens, and Paris. Antoine Norbert de Patek settled in Versoix, a small town near Geneva, a few kilometers away, in 1835, living with Thomas Moreau, the uncle of a woman he would later marry in 1839: Marie-Louise Adelaide Elisabeth Thomasine Dénizard.

When Norbert de Patek collaborated with Franciszek Czapek in 1839, the company was initially named “Patek, Czapek & Cie” and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. By 1845, Czapek officially decided to leave the company to pursue some personal ventures, leading to the renaming of the company to Patek & Cie.

Adrien Philippe (1815-1894)

At the age of 18, Adrien Philippe left his homeland to hone his watchmaking skills. To pursue this, he began his years of apprenticeship in France. In his quest for perfection, he left Le Havre in 1836 and traveled to London, where he worked for a reputable watchmaker for three years.

Upon returning to France, he chose Versailles as his place of residence, but his business did not thrive as expected.

Adrien Philippe was the first person in the world to invent and establish the system of winding a watch by the crown, a mechanism still used today. This invention earned him a gold medal at the French Industrial Exhibition in 1844. It was at this exhibition that Jean Adrien Philippe met Antoine Norbert de Patek, and a year later, he became the leading watchmaker at Patek & Cie in Geneva, with an agreement that one-third of the company’s profits would be his.

In 1851, Adrien Philippe became one of the two founders of the Patek Philippe watch company, and the name Patek Philippe was officially born and continued to flourish.

2. Patek Philippe – Notable Milestones

Royal Watch Brand

From its inception, Patek Philippe crafted watches for royalty.

In 1840, the Princess of Russia, Zubów, purchased a pendant watch engraved with the royal emblem. This watch was crafted in 1839, the year Patek, Czapek & Cie was established, and was one of the first watches produced by the company.

In 1867, Queen Louise of Denmark bought a Patek Philippe pocket watch to commemorate her and King Christian IX’s 25th wedding anniversary.

In 1850, Duke Catherine of Russia owned Patek Philippe’s No. 2668 watch.

When Queen Victoria of England chose a pocket watch at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, Patek Philippe’s reputation was officially sealed among royal families worldwide. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, the company’s watches were specially commissioned by royal members and nobility, adorned beautifully with special features, and often engraved with portraits. These exquisite timepieces were highly regarded and sometimes used as diplomatic gifts. Additionally, some watches were engraved with initials for the upper class.

In 1851, Antoine Norbert de Patek went to the United States to begin a collaboration with the luxury jewelry company Tiffany & Co., a partnership that continues to this day. Also, in the same year, the world’s smallest pocket watch, No. 3503, by the company, was exhibited at the London Museum.

During the 1850s, Patek Philippe’s business progressed significantly despite the Swiss watch industry being adversely affected by the crisis. In 1853, the company moved to a large building on Grand Quai, at 168 rue du Rhône, Geneva.

From 1854 to 1858, with a broad vision, Antoine Norbert de Patek selected his best watches to sell in Paris, Liverpool, and New York. He began his journey traveling to North America and later Europe. Shortly after returning to Switzerland, he embarked on a tour of Europe.

1868 – Patek Philippe crafted the first Swiss wristwatch for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary.

1889 – Invented the perpetual calendar movement for pocket watches.

1901 – The company changed its name to Ancienne Manufacture d’Horlogerie Patek Philippe & Cie, S.A.

1932 – The company was bought by brothers Charles and Jean Stern. Patek Philippe has officially been a Stern family company ever since.
